Hello, my name is Karyn Whatson and I am a Nurse practitioner (NP) / Mātanga Tapuhi. I offer a blending of medical and nursing skills. I can assess, diagnose, order tests and prescribe / review medication as well as provide non-medication focused treatments.
I offer a wide range of services for privately paying clients or organisations in Southland – either face to face or virtually, or throughout New Zealand via virtual consults.

A little bit about me:
I have more than 20 years’ experience in mental health. I have worked in a variety of areas including inpatients, community, forensics, primary, child and adolescent mental health.
My qualifications include a Master of Nursing – first class honours, Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science – endorsed in Nursing, Post Graduate Certificate in Health Science – endorsed in child, adolescent and family mental health, Post Graduate Certificate in Forensic psychiatric care and a Bachelor Degree in Nursing.
I have training in Professional supervision and have co- facilitated an accredited professional supervision course. My talking therapy training and experience includes mindfulness, brief intervention from a cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) approach, Solution focused therapy, trauma informed care, psychological first aid and motivational interviewing along with reflective counselling skills.
I am a current member of Nurse Practitioners New Zealand, Pharmac mental health advisory committee, and the Nursing Council of NZ Nurse Practitioner panel group.
My goal is to support improved health outcomes by providing evidenced-based specialist psychiatric consultation, treatment or on-referral for individual requirements.
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse practitioners are highly skilled autonomous health professionals who have advanced education, clinical training and demonstrated competency. They have the legal authority to practice beyond the level of a registered nurse.
Nurse practitioners in mental health combine their advanced nursing skills with diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic knowledge. They provide support for people with common and complex conditions.

- Known or suspected mild to moderate mental health problem/s
Exclusion criteria
- A current client of secondary mental health services
- Requiring case management
Presenting with immediate or high risk of harm to self or others
